ChatGPT is a chatbot developed by OpenAI based on their fourth generation Generative Pre-trained Transformer (GPT), a machine learning model that’s been trained on internet data and human feedback. The frenzy around AI-based writing assistants, and the potential of AI generally, was kickstarted late last year when OpenAI launched ChatGPT, then based on GPT-3.
The current available version of ChatGPT uses GPT-4, though it’s only available to Pro subscribers who pay $20 USD/month. All users of ChatGPT, including free users, get access to an upgraded version of GPT-3.5, which responds much faster than GPT-4, but is prone to making more mistakes.
ChatGPT and most modern Ai writing tools now extend beyond writing: they’re also valuable products for research, summarization, and synthesis.
